Music is built from sound and measured silence, and both have a place in a bar.
What you can practise in PianEd: Notes & Rests Builder is an existing free Level 1 Skill, not a premium exercise. It appears in the Android app’s Skills path, and you can practise the concept on-screen.
How 4/4 works
The top number in 4/4 tells you that each bar has four quarter-note beats. A quarter note lasts one beat, a half note lasts two, and a quarter rest lasts one silent beat.
A bar must add up to the correct total even when some of it is silent.
Build your first bar
Try quarter note (1) + quarter note (1) + half note (2). That equals four beats. Another correct example is half note (2) + quarter rest (1) + quarter note (1).
PianEd’s free Notes & Rests Builder focuses on filling an entire 4/4 measure correctly.
Clap it and count it
Count four steady beats. Clap once on beat one and once on beat two, then hold the final half note through beats three and four. For the bar with a rest, clap beats one and two as a sustained half note, stay silent on three, and clap on four.
Always count the silent beat; otherwise the bar becomes too short.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Giving a half note only one beat. Slow down and return to one clear, relaxed repetition.
- Skipping over rests instead of counting them. Slow down and return to one clear, relaxed repetition.
- Thinking a full bar has to contain exactly four note symbols. Slow down and return to one clear, relaxed repetition.
Your four-minute challenge
Use one minute to understand the notes or movement, two minutes to repeat the smallest useful pattern and one minute to test yourself without hints. Finish when your sound is clean, not when you feel tired.
Then open the Notes & Rests Builder Skill in PianEd to practise with the app’s real guided exercise. The full set of 15 built-in free Skills remains part of the Level 1 experience.
