The Theory path

Music theory that is attached to something

Knowing what a dominant seventh is means nothing until you have heard one resolve. PianEd’s 120 theory lessons sit alongside the pieces that use them, so every idea arrives with a reason to care about it — and ends with a quiz, so you find out whether it stuck.

PianEd feature preview of the theory path, showing lessons on the circle of fifths, keys and scales, intervals, chords and harmony, and chord progressions.

What the 120 lessons cover

Each lesson is a few minutes long, uses animated diagrams rather than paragraphs of prose, and finishes with a short quiz.

1

Foundations FREE

The musical alphabet, the keyboard’s repeating pattern, the stave, treble and bass clefs, note values and your first time signatures.

2

Rhythm and intervals

Counting, rests, ties and dots; seconds through octaves; how interval shapes look on the page and feel under the hand.

3

Scales, keys and triads

Major scale construction, key signatures, sharps and flats, and the three primary chords that carry most songs ever written.

4

Minor keys and the circle of fifths

Natural, harmonic and melodic minor; relative and parallel keys; chord inversions; cadences and how phrases end.

5

Colour and form

Seventh chords, syncopation, dynamics and articulation, pedalling, musical form, and the ii–V–I progression behind most of jazz.

6

Writing your own

Voice leading and two-voice independence, lead sheets and chord symbols, jazz voicings, and composing short pieces of your own.

Why the quiz matters

Reading an explanation and understanding it feel identical while you are reading. They stop feeling identical the moment somebody asks a question.

Every theory lesson in PianEd ends with a short quiz for exactly that reason. It is not a score to chase — it is the difference between “that made sense” and “I can use that”.

Lessons that you have not passed stay visible on the path, so nothing is quietly skipped, and the mastery percentage on your progress screen reflects what you have actually demonstrated.

PianEd feature preview of progress tracking, with a mastery breakdown across songs, technique and theory.

Theory next to the music, not instead of it

Learn it, then hear it

A lesson on cadences is followed by pieces that end with one. The idea and the sound arrive within the same session.

Learn it, then play it

The scale you just studied is the scale in the next technique drill, with the standard fingering shown. See the drills.

Short enough to actually do

No lesson takes more than a few minutes, which is what makes theory survivable on a fifteen-minute practice day.

Questions

Frequently asked

How many theory lessons are there?

120, spread across six levels, each with animated diagrams and a closing quiz.

Do I need theory to play piano?

You can play without it, but you will progress more slowly and memorise more than you understand. Theory is what turns a hundred separate pieces into a small number of patterns.

Are the theory lessons free?

The Level 1 lessons are free forever. Levels 2 to 6 unlock with PianEd Pro.

Is this suitable for someone with no musical background?

Yes. Lesson one is the musical alphabet. Nothing assumes previous study.

Does it cover the circle of fifths?

Yes, in Level 4, alongside minor keys, relative keys and chord inversions.

Theory you will actually use tomorrow

120 short lessons, each with a quiz, and Level 1 is free forever.
